Managed Services Provider

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Managed Services Provider (MSP) ( English for operator model provider or operator solution provider ) is an information technology service provider that assumes and manages the responsibility for the provision of a defined range of services for its customers. But other services (such as training, building services, personnel services) are also increasingly being provided by MSPs.

Services

The services provided by information technology service providers include hosting services , virtual private networks (VPN), Voice over IP (VoIP), Internet access and network security .

Many MSPs offer their services remotely over the Internet rather than through customer visits, which are time consuming and often expensive. The offers of the MSPs also include remote maintenance , desktop security and monitoring, patch management and remote data backup , as well as technical assistance but also other additional services.

Managed service providers usually offer several price structures. The most common is a monthly fee, but “time and material” and “price per desktop, server, network or device” models are also possible. For this fee, the customer's IT infrastructure is monitored (often even 24/7) and any problems that arise are resolved. This gives the customer the opportunity to focus on their own business goals and predictable costs, as well as predictable revenues for the MSP. Managed services offer small and medium-sized companies in particular the opportunity to save more costs by outsourcing their IT needs than by setting up an internal IT support department.

Today there are also managed service providers on the market for almost all permanent services. Personnel services, process management and other functions are offered and used as MSP.

development

The business model behind Managed Services was initially developed for large corporations by large IT companies such as EDS (Electronic Data Systems), IBM Global Services, and CenterBeam . It was later adapted to small and medium-sized businesses by numerous resellers as their current hardware and software resale model resulted in consistently lower profit margins. Some of the pioneers of managed services today are Dynasis (Atlanta), SLPowers (South Florida), and Connecting Point (Las Vegas).
