Manfred Görlach

Manfred Görlach (born July 12, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German Anglist .

Life

Görlach studied English, Latin, Indo-European, philosophy and education at the Free University of Berlin (1957–1961). In December 1961 he was arrested by the State Security in East Berlin and sentenced in March 1962 in Potsdam by judge Hermann Wohlgethan to four years in prison for helping to escape. In August 1964 he was ransomed by the Federal Republic of Germany and completed his studies with a state examination in West Berlin in November 1966. From April 1967 to March 1984 he was employed as an assistant and academic adviser at the English Department of Heidelberg University ; here he also received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on southern English legend . From 1984 until his retirement in 2002 he held the chair for English Linguistics and Medieval Studies at the University of Cologne .
