from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Schäfer (born December 4, 1949 in Amorbach ; † March 9, 2003 in Bad Rodach ) was a German ethnologist, photographer, filmmaker and activist who focused on the economy and barter of the Asháninka, Nomatsiguenga and Ashéninga in Peru as well as on the visual Researched anthropology.

Life

Manfred Schäfer completed his photography training in Aschaffenburg from 1970 to 1973. In 1976 he graduated from the University of Applied Sciences for Photo Engineering in Cologne. He then studied ethnology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he obtained his master's degree in 1982; In 1987 he received his doctorate in this subject. During his training as a photographer and studying film technology, he made numerous trips abroad to North and Central Africa and Madagascar. In the course of studying ethnology, he spent several years doing research in Peru and Mexico. In Peru, Schäfer campaigned for the award of collective land titles to the comunidades nativas of the Asháninka and Nomatsiguenga of the Selva Central. After he published the article “I am not a Campa, but Asháninca” in 1980, experts and the Peruvian public started using the self-designation of this ethnic group. He documented the protests of the Awajún and Asháninka against the attacks during Werner Herzog's film work on “Fitzcarraldo”. From 1989 to 2003 Manfred Schäfer was a freelance producer, author and cameraman of TV documentaries in Peru, Mexico and Cuba for WDR, SWR, 3sat and ARTE. In 2004 the Ethnofilmfest of the Munich Museum für Völkerkunde (Museum of the 5 Continents) dedicated a retrospective to its documentaries.
