Don't be afraid of the atom! is a two-minute satirical cartoon directed by Jon Frickey and Till Penzek. The film is in the style of educational films and television commercials from the mid-20th century. He tries to expose unfair arguments for the civil use of nuclear energy through an absurdly belittling presentation.

“Don't be afraid of the atom” was shown on March 17, 2007 in the satirical program Extra 3 and was shown at festivals such as the Rüsselsheimer Filmtage in the following years . In 2008 a sequel was released with the title “Don't be afraid of the repository”.

action

The figure of Dr. Schmidt and the mascot Atomi discuss the risks and benefits of " nuclear power ". Dr. Schmidt asks critical questions, whereupon Atomi pleads in a lighthearted tone for the use of atomic energy. First of all, Dr. Schmidt, the smoke from coal-fired power plants and the noise from wind turbines had given him a bad day. Atomi suggests nuclear power as a "totally clean" alternative. Nuclear power works very simply and is also renewable , after all , nuclear power plants have to be renewed every 15 to 20 years. Atomi also has a “very simple” answer to the question of how nuclear waste should be dealt with: There will soon be a new system of Castor transports that will travel around Europe forever and thus avoid the problem of final disposal . Atomi successfully distracts from the question of the risk of a worst-case scenario with a little circus trick.

Finally, Atomi explains the (alleged) advantages of " radioactive radiation " using the example of a sick child who has lost his hair as a result of the effects of radiation: she saves visits to the hairdresser and money. In addition, the consumption of sweets can be harmful to health and cause tooth decay . Now all of Dr. Schmidt absently. The film ends with Dr. Schmidt, Atomi and the hairless child eat sweets together and in a happy mood.

reception

The FAZ wrote, “Don't be afraid of the atom” turns the arguments of the power plant lobby upside down with infantile and macabre phrases.

In the program of the short film festival Torque # 9 in Munich (2012), “No fear of the atom” was compared with “staid educational films” from the 1930s-50s in which “grotesque lobby mascots present borderline dubious idiot pedagogy”. The film takes “the stupid mechanisms of industry-dependent 'educational work' with morbid charm to extremes”.
