Manhã de Carnaval (German: "Carnival morning") is a bossa nova composed by Luiz Bonfá and Antônio Maria , which developed into the jazz standard in the second half of the 20th century . The song was composed in 1959 as one of the musical pieces for the Brazilian film Orfeu Negro and in it both sung and hummed by Agostinho dos Santos (played by Breno Mello as Orfeu) and Elizeth Cardoso (played by Marpessa Dawn as Euridice).

In the following period, when numerous other bossa nova pieces were picked up by jazz musicians, it was re-recorded by several predominantly Brazilian artists and thus found its way into the international jazz scene. The song is better known today under the title Orfeo Negro or English Black Orpheus, under which it was played by Don Cherry , for example . Also widespread is the title A Day in the Life of a Fool, under which Manhã de Carnaval by Carl Sigman was published with a newly written text.

The pop singer Alexandra sang a German version of Ernst Bader with the title Das Glück came to me like a dream, which is underlaid with a rumba rhythm, but otherwise has little musical reference to the Latin American region. Georgette Dee again established this version as a chanson.

song lyrics

Manhã tão bonita manhã
De um dia feliz que chegou
O sol no céu surgiu
E em cada cor brilhou
Voltou o sonho, então, ao coração.

Depois deste dia feliz
Não sei se outro dia haverá
É nossa manhã, tão bela afinal
Manhã de Carnaval.

Canta o meu coração
A alegria chegou
Na manhã tão feliz
Deste amor…
