Manmohandas Soparkar

Manmohandas B. Soparkar (born April 10, 1884 in Poona , † May 31, 1952 in Bombay ) was an Indian physician and parasitologist who was best known for research in the field of trematode parasitoses and tuberculosis .

biography

Soparkar went to school in his hometown of Poona and studied at the Grand Medical College in Bombay, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1913. In 1918 he developed a special medium , the Soparkar medium, to cultivate influenza viruses. After the disease with pair leeches ( schistosomiasis ) spread by infected soldiers returning home after the First World War , he examined the development of the parasites and found and described the larvae of various parasitic trematodes . He also worked on research into tuberculosis and described methods for cultivating the bacteria as well as the routes of infection between infected people. He also researched animal forms of tuberculosis.

In 1935 Soparkar became Assistant Director of the Haffkin Institute in Bombay and worked on various epidemics, including cholera at the King Institute in Guindy , Madras . In 1937 he was inducted into the National Institute of Sciences of India and in 1949 he became president of the medical section of the Indian Science Congress. In 1952 Soparkar died in Bombay.
