Mannosylation

The mannosylation is a posttranslational protein modification that the glycosylation counts. A mannose group is attached to a protein.

Mannosylations are among the glycosylations. These are catalyzed by mannosyltransferases . A distinction can be made between O-glycosylations and C-glycosylations.

O-mannosylations are performed by protein O-mannosyltransferases 1 and 2 (PMT) in the endoplasmic reticulum , unlike other O-glycosylations. Gene defects in the genes that code for PMT (POMT1 and POMT2) lead to limb-girdle muscular dystrophy , Walker-Warburg syndrome or muscle-eye-brain disease .

C-mannosylation is the only known C-glycosylation. The C-mannosyltransferase α-mannose is attached to tryptophan in a Trp-x-xTrp sequence.
