Manorbier Castle is an 11th century Norman castle . It stands in the southern Welsh county of Pembrokeshire near the village of Manorbier , five miles southwest of Tenby .

history

Land was granted to the Norman knight Odo de Barri at the end of the 11th century and he had a large house with a wooden hall built on its property, which was protected by an earth wall. His son William began the first stone conversions in the first half of the 12th century. The protective wall was replaced by a stone enclosure in 1230. In 1260 a chapel was added to the building complex .

Gerald of Wales, known as Giraldus Cambrensis , was born at Manorbier Castle in 1146. The great 12th century scholar and son of William de Barri was a paternal grandson of the legendary Welsh princess Nest ferch Rhys . He was closely connected to the place of his birth, about which he wrote: "Of all the unspoilt areas in Wales, Manorbier is by far the most beautiful".

The de Barris inhabited Manorbier Castle until the mid-14th century. By 1300 all buildings and fortifications were almost complete. In 1403 the castle had to adapt to attacks by Owain Glyndŵr . It was held by the royalists during the English Civil War but captured by Cromwell's troops in 1646 .

Gardens in the courtyard

Around 1880, JR Cobb, who had rented the property, had repairs carried out on the decaying buildings and walls and at the end of the Tudor barn a new house was built for himself; it is now used as a holiday home.

The castle is open to the public. Visitors can tour the chapel, crypt and dungeon with a secret passage for smugglers. It is also known for its gardens in the courtyard. Nearby are the dovecote and the castle mill.

More recently, Manorbier Castle has been the setting for Cair Paravel in the BBC version of the Chronicles of Narnia . In 2003 indoor and outdoor shots were shot there for the feature film I Capture the Castle .
