Mansenberge in the nature reserve

The Mansenberg Mountains on the municipal border between Groß- and Klein Berßen in Emsland are one of the largest hill burial grounds in western Lower Saxony . About 80 hills are unevenly scattered together. Few of them reach heights of around 3.0 m. The barrow field was more than twice as large, but was partially destroyed; In 1936 158 hills were counted. Presumably this burial ground was occupied during the Bronze and the older Iron Ages .

As in the case of the Männige Mountains , the prefix “Mansen” indicates popular beliefs that the hills are the dwelling places of dwarfs or “subterranean”.

The Mansenberge are located within the nature reserve hill grave heath near Big and Small Berßen . As a rule, the fenced-in tumulus heather is not accessible. From a field path that runs right along the border between the communities of Groß Berßen and Klein Berßen through the heathland, the barrow field is clearly visible.
