The Manzano cottontail rabbit ( Sylvilagus cognatus ) is a species of mammal from the genus of cottontail rabbits within the hare-like (Lagomorpha). The range of this species is limited to a very small area in New Mexico in the United States .

Very little data is available on the Manzano cottontail rabbit. It is similar in appearance to the Florida cottontail ( S. floridanus ), a subspecies of which it was considered until around 1998.

The distribution area of ​​the Manzano cottontail rabbit is limited to the area of ​​the Manzano Mountains in the US state of New Mexico , with only a few specimens being scientifically known. The animal used for the first scientific description was caught near Bosque Peak at an altitude of 2,880 meters. Together with a few other specimens, it comes from the owner of a ranch near the town of Tajique at the eastern foot of the mountains.

Way of life

No data is available on the way of life of the Manzano cottontail rabbit. The species lives in the higher mountain regions of the Manzano Mountains, in which coniferous forests are the dominant vegetation. The Manzano cottontail rabbit is likely to have similar habitat requirements to the highland populations of the Florida forest rabbit.

Systematics

The Manzano cottontail rabbit is assigned to the cottontail rabbit (genus Sylvilagus ) as an independent species . It was first scientifically described by Edward William Nelson in 1907 and was until 1998 a subspecies Sylvilagus floridanus cognatus of the Florida forest rabbit ( S. floridanus ).

Hazard and protection

The Manzano cottontail rabbit is not classified in a hazard category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to the limited amount of data available, but listed as a species with “insufficient data” ( data deficient ). A decline in the populations is not known. Due to the very small distribution area, however, it is assumed that the species is endangered.
