Maobitou ( Chinese  貓 鼻頭 , Pinyin Māo bítou ) is a peninsula in the municipality of the city of Hengchun in Pingtung , Taiwan . It is located south of the city's settlement area and is part of Kenting National Park . It forms the western border of Nan Wan Bay (South Bay) and is one of the southernmost points on the island of Taiwan .

Surname

Māobítou is a Chinese description of the native name. The Chinese characters "貓 鼻頭" literally mean "cats nose-head (headland)", the second part "bítou" being a dialect variant of "bí", an expression for "projection" / "headland".

An old name is Niauphi from the local Hokkien dialect.

geography

The peninsula is separated from the urban area of ​​Hengchun in the north by the Longluan Tan (龍 鑾 潭) and Cao Tan (草 潭) lakes . The Guanshan (關 山) begins as a hill in the north and slopes slowly towards the south. Numerous grave and cemetery complexes as well as small temples can be found on the edge of the settlements on the peninsula. The northern end of the peninsula marks the seaward side of the fishing port Hongchaikeng Yugang (紅 柴 坑 漁港), at the southern end of the headland there is the small bay Baisha Wan (白 沙灣, English White Sand Bay) and to the east is the bay Nan Wan , that leads to Eluanbi . In the northeast is the Maanshan nuclear power plant .

Other attractions include Xiǎo Bā lǐ dǎoyán (小 巴里島 岩, Little Bali Cliffs) and the temples Cháo yīn sì (潮音寺) and Gu shan guan (古 山 宮).

Highway 26 (台 26 線) provides access to the cape .
