Mappeur was the term in Austria-Hungary for a (mostly) officer who mapped a region or an entire country on behalf of a military geographic institute . The result, the military survey of the country, the activity as mapping (compare with English map - German map) was referred to as mapping .
Mapping is generally used today in the sense of localizing and visualizing in various technical languages from medicine to computer technology.
