Maps (artist)

Maps is the stage name of the British electric popper James Chapman. The artist , who comes from the English city ​​of Northampton , is stylistically assigned to electropop of the 1990s , psychedelic folk rock and so-called shoegazing ( Dreampop ).

Career

At a young age, James Chapman was a member of an indie rock group. He later met the successful English electric popper Aphex Twin , who gave him access to electronic music.

In 2005, the EP Start Something / To the Sky was released under his own label Lost Space Recording . He then released the single Don´t Fear . A year later, the title made it to number 26 in the "Records of the year" of the British music magazine New Musical Express .

In the summer of 2007 James Chapman released his debut album We can create together with the British independent label Mute Records , from which he released the singles It will find you , You don´t know her name and To The Sky . The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize that same year .

In 2009 the second studio album Turning the Mind was released . Compared to the first album, there were significantly fewer influences from the music genre shoegazing , while electro-pop elements were retained.

Typical of Chapman's music is that it is accompanied by electronic instruments and has a melancholy and melodic nature. Despite the thoughtful style, most of the pieces incorporate rhythmic beats .
