Maria Teresa Mora

María Teresa Mora Iturralde (born October 15, 1902 in Cuba , † October 3, 1980 in La Habana ) was a Cuban chess player .

At the age of eleven she played her first tournament in the Havana Chess Club. She was the only person who received chess lessons from José Raúl Capablanca . Mora was also the first and so far only woman to win the Cuban Chess Championship in 1922 . She achieved the title of Cuban Women's Champion for 22 years in a row from 1938 to 1960.

She was twice a participant in challenger tournaments of the chess world champion . She finished 7./8. Place 1939 in Buenos Aires (winner Vera Menchik ), and 10/11. 1949/50 in Moscow (winner Lyudmila Wladimirowna Rudenko ). She played her last game in 1962 in correspondence chess by phone against the Colombian Anita de Sánchez .

Mora was named International Women's Champion (WIM) in 1950 and was one of the first 17 players to be awarded this title.
