Mara Takla Haymanot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mara Takla Haymanot Gebre-kristos was Negus Negest ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia and the founder of the Zagwe dynasty . In some king lists his name appears as "Mararah", in others as "Takla Haymanot" or Tekle Haymanot .

Mara was born in the province of Hamasien Mesfinto, which was his center of power. He was originally a general under Dil Na'od , whose daughter, Masoba Warq, became his wife. Mara overthrew his father-in-law and founded the new dynasty.

The time of his accession to the throne is controversial, as there are two different traditions regarding the period of the rule of the Zagwe dynasty . The more common one assumes 333 years, while the other states a period of 133 years. The Italian scholar Carlo Conti Rossini accepted the shorter interval and thus, counting back from the recognized end of the Zagwe dynasty in 1270 , ends up in 1137 for the beginning of the dynasty. He supports this theory with the documented correspondence between Pope Yoannis V of Alexandria and an unknown Ethiopian king who asked for a new Abuna because the current one was too old. Conti Rossini argues that the real reason lies in the fact that the Abuna did not tolerate the coup which brought Mara Takla Haymanot to the throne.

His kingdom extended over parts of Lasta , Wag , Tigray and possibly the northern part of Begemder . It was thus considerably smaller than that of the later Solomonic rulers.
