Marble is a free program for displaying geographic maps. It was developed for the KDE Software Compilation 4 , is based on Qt4 and is part of the KDE education project . It runs on all common operating systems such as Linux , Mac OS X and MS Windows .

Geothek is a spin-off from Marble. Geothek is operated by Ed. Hölzel developed and sold as software for school atlases.

Scope and functionalities

The program can show the globe and other celestial bodies such as the moon, Mars or Venus, which can be rotated and enlarged as required. The scope of delivery is 5-10 megabytes of vector and bitmap data. Additional map material is automatically downloaded from the Internet and can be added manually. It is also possible to create and integrate your own maps.

development

OpenStreetMap integration

Many more features were added in subsequent KDE versions. Now even more world map views are possible. In addition to the classic globe and a flat map, a Mercator projection can also be selected . Cloud images can be projected live onto the globe via the Internet and current weather data can be displayed for many locations. A Wikipedia module generates symbols in the places for which an article exists in the English Wikipedia. An OpenStreetMap map, which is compared with the Internet, is also available to the user. A route planner has also been included since KDE SC 4.5 . In its mobile version, Marble runs on the Nokia N900.

Awards

Marble won the "Qt Center Programming Contest 2007" in the "Desktop Application" category.
