Ed. Hölzel is a publisher in Vienna known for its atlases , which are mainly used in Austrian schools, and which also publishes other school books.

Founded in 1844 by Eduard Hölzel in Olomouc as a bookstore and publisher, he moved to Vienna in 1861 and began printing the Geographical School Atlas for grammar schools, secondary schools and commercial schools , also known as the Kozenn Atlas , under the direction of Blasius Kozenn . This was printed not only in German, but also in the other languages ​​of the monarchy . The Kozenn Atlas, which has been continuously expanded and edited in many editions, is still used under this name today. In addition to the atlases, other products for school such as wall maps and blackboards were soon produced. From 1850 the publisher was a leader in the use of the then new and modern color lithography .

The end of the First World War brought a sharp decline in this business, as only today's Austria remained as a market area. Nevertheless, the publishing house was able to expand its activities again.

Even after the Second World War , Ed. Hölzel start all over again. With the help of the war correspondent and officer of the British Army, Moshe Brawer, the production could be expanded again with foreign atlases like in the newly founded Israel . Licensed editions for France (Editions Bordas), South Tyrol (Athesia), Qatar and many other countries followed. In 1968 the publishing house received the authorization to use the federal coat of arms in business dealings as a " state award " .

For many years the publisher also supplied the official road map of Austria 1: 150,000 for the ÖAMTC .

Today Ed. In addition to conventional print media (school atlases, school books), Hölzel also includes CDs in its product range.

With around 20 employees, the publishing house is one of the leading cartographic and educational publishers in Austria.
