The Marcelluskapelle , occasionally also Marzelluskapelle or Deutschherrenkapelle , is a Roman Catholic chapel in Beckingen in the Saarland . It is a listed monument as a single monument.

history

The chapel was built in 1634 by Philipp Arnold von Ahr, the Commander of the Teutonic Order. During the wave of secularization of the French Revolution, the chapel was auctioned and then changed hands several times. An interdict by the Bishop of Metz finally prohibited services in the small church. In 1712, however, a seven-year indulgence was granted by Pope Clement XI. allowed for the chapel.

In 1858 the Beckingen parish acquired the Marcellus Chapel from private owners, but the small church fell into disrepair in the decades that followed. The first restoration measures were not carried out until 1914/15. A major restoration then took place in 1925, and the interior and exterior were restored again in the early 1950s. In 1969/70 the roof and truss were renewed and a wooden roof turret with a bell was installed. In addition, the old portal was replaced by a wrought iron one. Further restoration measures followed in 1981 and 1997.

architecture

The inscription on the keystone of the portal arch names the builder: "PAVALDBLTOR 1634" (written out: Philipp Arnold von Ahr, Landcomthur der Balley Lothringen, Teutsch Order Knight 1634 ) and shows the combined family coat of arms of the builder Philipp von Ahr and that of the Teutonic Order . The one-bay hall construction is completed in the east by a three-sided choir. The slate hipped roof is crowned centrally by a small wooden roof turret with bells. The hall and choir sides each have a pointed arched stained glass window on both long sides.

Furnishing

The altar was made by a Tyrolean woodcarver and, according to the date on the Predella, was made in 1684. It is made of oak and is decorated with rich carvings. In the center is a wooden Marcellus figure from 1634. On the two long sides there is a figure of Mary on the left and a figure of Christ on consoles on the right. Corner blocks and sandstone embossing decorate the plastered building outside. In the west, an ogival wrought iron portal opens the entrance to the church.
