Life

Marco Antonio Ferro worked as a lutenist in Vienna, in the foreword of his only known collection he described himself as " Cavalier Aurato " ( Knight of the Golden Spur ) and " Conte Palatino Cesarea ", consequently he was one of the higher-ranking courtiers at the court of Emperor Ferdinand III. Ferro, whose origin is unknown, composed music in the Venetian style. From 1642 to 1652 and from October 1658 to 1662 he was a member of the Vienna Court Music Band .

His only known work is the collection " Sonate a due, tre, quattro strumenti e basso continuo " Op. 1, printed in Venice in 1649. Each of the 12 one-movement sonatas consists of four to five sections in accordance with the style of the time, in which homophonic slow parts and fugal allegros alternate. All works are kept quite simple from a compositional point of view. One of the earliest examples of the running bass is found in the 6th sonata. Sparkling passages and sudden dissonances, extravagant and bizarre ideas are characteristic of Ferro's style, which the musicologist Hugo Riemann described somewhat contemptuously at the end of the 19th century as a “patched sonata, similar to the costume of a harlequin”.
