Club career

In his youth Marco Zernicke played for VfB Hermsdorf .

He played his first men's game for Hertha BSC in 1987 in the third-class Oberliga Berlin when he was substituted on in the top match against Tennis Borussia . At the end of the season, Hertha rose to the 2nd division. But it wasn't until the 32nd matchday of the 1988/89 season that he was used for the first time in a 4-0 home win over Rot-Weiss Essen and promptly scored a goal. In the following season, the young midfielder already played 13 league games and was thus also involved in the Herthan team's promotion to the Bundesliga . In the top division, however, Zernicke and his team should quickly reach their limits and were beaten early in the season in the table cellar. The young Zernicke was only used regularly from the winter break, when the new coach Peter Neururer was hired by Berlin. However, relegation could no longer be prevented and Zernicke's last season should remain in the Bundesliga. Until 1994 he played as an established regular player for Hertha in the second division, mostly in the top third of the table.

From 1994 to 2000 the midfielder played for SC Fortuna Köln . While his former team Hertha BSC made the promotion in 1997, Fortuna always played in the midfield of the league. At Cologne, Marco Zernicke was initially converted into a defensive player, but from his third season he played again in defensive midfield. In the 1999/00 season his team was able to defeat city rivals 1. FC Köln twice, but was relegated at the end of the season. In the following two years, Zernicke, again as a defender, played for Alemannia Aachen in the second division. After the 2001/02 season and the only narrowly prevented relegation of the Alemanni, Marco Zernicke ended his career as an active soccer player at the age of 32.
