Marcus Cornelius Nigrinus Curiatius Maternus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Cornelius Nigrinus Curiatius Maternus (* before 60 AD; † after 97 AD) was a Roman military and politician.

Nigrinus was a knight and came from Liria in the Tarraconensis . Under Vespasian he was admitted to the Senate . He was governor in the province of Gallia Aquitania and is said to have been a suffect consul around the year 83. He was consular legate of the Roman province of Moesia ( Moesia ), after the division of the province of Moesia inferior (Lower Moesia ). In the Danube Wars it proved itself and was twice endowed with the highest honors, apart from the ornamenta triumphalia ; namely, he received four coronae each, four hastae purae each and four vexilla each . According to current knowledge, Nigrinus was thus the most highly decorated General Domitian .

Nigrinus reached the climax of his career with the legacy in the province of Syria . A military diploma proves that he was governor in the province for the first time in 93; he remained in this function until 97. He was considered a promising candidate for the succession to the throne after Emperor Nerva and thus Trajan's fiercest competitor . As a result of an usurpation attempt - he is said to have incited the Praetorian prefect Casperius Aelianus to rebellion by "bribery" - Nigrinus was withdrawn from the province. After Trajan's accession to power, he retired to his home in Liria.
