The Roman politician and general Marcus Ulpius Traianus (* before 30 AD; † before 100 AD), 113 divinized as divus Traianus pater , was the father of the Roman emperor Trajan and the great-uncle of his successor Hadrian .

Ulpius Traianus belonged to the descendants of a group of colonists who lived in 205 BC. BC by Scipio Africanus in Italica in the province of Baetica in the south of the Iberian Peninsula . His family originally came from Tuder in Umbria . In the Jewish War led by the later Emperor Vespasian , Traianus commanded the Legio X Fretensis in 67/68 . During the so-called Four Emperor's Year , in the civil war after the death of Nero, he was a partisan of Vespasian and later of the Flavian dynasty founded by him ; in thanks he was raised to the patriciate by Vespasian . Traianus was a suffect consul between 70 and 72 and administered the important province of Syria for five years from 73 . There he managed to prevent an impending Parthian attack . Later he was governor of his home province of Baetica and finally proconsul of the province of Asia .

With his wife Marcia, Traianus had two children, the future emperor Trajan and a daughter, Ulpia Marciana , who was raised to Augusta by her brother in 105 . He died before 100 and was raised to god by his son 113.
