Marcus de Jong

Marcus de Jong (born November 8, 1901 in Amsterdam , † November 5, 1969 in The Hague ) was a Dutch Romanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

De Jong received his doctorate in 1938 under Karel Rudolph Gallas at the University of Amsterdam with the thesis (Ed.) Diogo do Couto, Década quinta da "Ásia" (Coimbra 1938). There he was from 1937 to 1954 private lecturer, from 1959 to 1967 lecturer (lecturer) and from 1967 until his death full professor of Portuguese .

During the Nazi era , de Jong escaped deportation by being housed in Barneveld thanks to Karel Johannes Frederiks .
