Margaret Downey

Margaret Downey (born August 16, 1950 ) is an American civil rights activist and current president of Atheist Alliance International . She is also the founder of the Anti-Discrimination Support Network , which campaigns for the interests of atheists and for the separation of church and state .

Downey grew up as the daughter of a Puerto Rican and an Irishman. She had long been active as a civil rights activist in various fields, including women's rights, before she focused on atheism, since her son was denied further membership in Boy Scouts of America because of his atheist beliefs. Their reports found their way into United Nations publications on religious discrimination. As a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and the American Humanist Association, she campaigned for the separation of religion and state .
