The Margelopsidae are a family of hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) that live exclusively in the sea . It is a small family with seven species in four genera .

features

The hydroid polyps are solitary and pelagic . The hydrocaulus is absent or is reduced to a small process. The hydrant is vase-shaped with filiform to moniliform tentacles, which are essentially divided into two places. The mouth tentacles are arranged in one or two tentacle wreaths. The aboral tentacles are either arranged in two or three alternating tentacle rings or are irregularly distributed over the larger part of the body. The Medusa buds form on short blastostyles between or above the aboral tentacles.

The medusa has four radial channels. The manubrium has a simple mouth. Two or more tentacles per bud emerge on the marginal buds. In some genera, the tentacles also start at different levels on the exumbrella. The tentacles are massive and moniliform. The gonads surround the manubrium. The eggs develop in actinula larvae or in encapsulated survival stages. You don't have ocelli .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species in the family live pelagic in the cooler waters of the North and South Atlantic and the North Pacific. Octobulbacea montchermosensis has been described from the sub-Antarctic south-west Atlantic.

Systematics

The "World Hydrozoa Database" currently lists only seven species, which are divided into four genera.
