Margus Tsahkna (born April 13, 1977 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . He was chairman of the conservative party Pro Patria and Res Publica Union ( Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit in Estonian ) from June 6, 2015 to May 13, 2017, and Estonian Minister of Defense from November 23, 2016 to June 12, 2017.

Life

He was born in 1977 in Tartu, where he also graduated from high school in 1995. He then studied theology at the University of Tartu from 1996 to 2002 and international law at the University of Toronto from 1999 to 2000 .

In 2000 he founded the Christian youth home in Tartu. Among other things, he is a member of the General Johan Laidoner Society and the “Corps Sakala” student union.

Political activity

In 2000 he joined the “Pro Patria” party. From 2001 to 2004 he was chairman of the “Noor-Isamaa”, the youth association of the then “Pro Patria” party. From 2003 to 2007 he was on the City Council of Tartu City . From 2003 to 2006 he was political secretary of the Pro Patria Union. After the merger of the Pro Patria Union and Res Publica parties to form “Pro Patria ja Res Publica Liit” (IRL), he acted from 2007 to 2010 as their general secretary and from 2010 to 2013 as political secretary. In 2013 he became the party's vice chairman. He has been a member of the Estonian Parliament since 2007 - from 2011 to 2014 he was chairman of the Social Commission.

Margus Tsahkna has been chairman of the IRL since June 2015. From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016 he was Estonian Minister of Social Affairs in the coalition government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas - then Minister of Defense in the successor government to Jüri Ratas . After his party had removed him from his chairmanship and ministerial post, he announced on June 26, 2017 that he was leaving the IRL.

Private

In 2009 he became known nationwide for coming second in the Estonian singing competition "Laulud tahtedega". He sang together with the winner of "Estonia sucht den Superstar" Birgit Õigemeel .

Margus Tsahkna is married and has two children.
