Dormition Monastery (Uniw)
The Dormition Monastery (Ukrainian Свято-Успенська Унівська Лавра) is a monastery in Uniw in Ukraine . It belongs to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and was the most important monastery in Galicia for many years .
history
Kingdom of Poland
The monastery already existed in the 14th century. In 1401, King Władysław II Jagiełło approved the re-establishment and handed it over to Orthodox monks. In 1549 the monastery was almost completely destroyed by the Tatars . After that it was rebuilt. In 1648 it received a printing press on which numerous Orthodox liturgical and theological books were produced.
In 1700 the monastery went over to the United Greek Catholic Church and was handed over to the Order of the Basilians .
Austrian Empire
It was dissolved in 1790. It became the residence of the Greek Catholic Metropolitan of Lviv .
Second Polish Republic
In 1919 it was given back to the monastery and the Order of the Studites . It received the rank of lavra . In the 1930s there was an important icon painting workshop there . In the 1940s, several Jewish children were hidden here by the Studites.
Ukrainian SSR
In 1947 the monastery was closed. It became a prison for Greek Catholic clergy, later an old people's home, then a mental hospital.
Ukraine
In 1991 the monastery was returned to the Studites and the Greek Catholic Church. It is the only lavra in this church. About 80 monks and novices live there.
