The Assumption protection Intercession Church in Fili ( Russian Церковь Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы в Филях , or abbreviated Покровская церковь в Филях ) is in the district of Park Filjowski in the western administrative district of Moscow Situated Russian Orthodox church in the style of Naryshkin Baroque , which was built in the 17th century. The church is in Filovsky Park, 6 Novosavodsskaya Street (Fili Metro Station).

history

The place Fili was handed over in 1688 by Peter I. to Lev Kirillowitsch Naryschkin, brother of Natalja Kirillowna . Since 1619 there was a wooden church dedicated to the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary . Today's Fili-Mariä-Schutz-und-Interbitte-Kirche was built between 1689 and 1694. In 1712 the archives of Lev Kirillovich Naryshkin's mansion were destroyed by fire, which means that the church's builder is unknown. There are various assumptions that the church was built by Jakow Buchwostow, Pyotr Potapov, or a Ukrainian builder. The names of the iconostasis builders and painters, Karp Solotarjow and Kirill Ulanow, are known.

On June 7, 1763, Catherine II visited the church on the way to her coronation. Afterwards the church was restored by Matwei Kazakow . During the French invasion in 1812 , the church was partially looted, damaged and used as a horse stable. After the war, it was restored and rededicated by the Moscow Metropolitan Philaret .

In 1868 the Fili owner Emmanuil Naryshkin sold the Fili mansion to the businessman Pavel Grigoryevich Schelaputin . The new owner took care of the church and the place. In the spring of 1893, the Russian landscape painter Alexei Kondratjewitsch Savrasov lived there and was inspired for his painting Schlammwetter .

Under Soviet rule, the church was closed for services in 1941 because the war began and was used as a hospital during the war. The domes were demolished for the purpose of camouflage against German air raids. The church was later damaged by fire bombs. In 1954 the church was given to the USSR Academy of Architecture. 1955 began a restoration that lasted until 1980 under the direction of the restorers Ewgeni Michailowski and Irina Ilyenko. In 1971 the church was opened as a branch of the Museum of Old Russian Culture and Arts Andrei Rublev.

The Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary has been used jointly by the Russian Orthodox Church and the state since 1990 . The church is currently located in the basement and the museum is located on the upper floor. In 2016 the church was completely returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

description

The Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary consisted of two separate churches, the lower church, which was originally intended for the residents of Fili and was consecrated to the honor of the Protection and Intercession of Mary, and the upper church, which was dedicated to the Abgar image consecrated and used by the Naryshkin family for worship. The latter is accessed via a representative flight of stairs. The church belongs to the architectural type Chram, ische pod Kolokoly (Храм, иже под колоколы, literally translated under bell church). The church building with the two floors is crowned by five onion domes. The four side towers are oriented towards the cardinal points. The bells are located in the central tower above the dome, which is equipped with a walkway. The wall surfaces have a rich ornamentation. In the upper church, some of the furnishings from the 17th century have been preserved.
