Location

The church is in the old town of Latakia on the north side of a side street about 50 m west of the unofficially known as "Amerikastraße" (شارع الأميركان) well-known, north-south running Mutanabbi road (شارع المتنبي), which is also the official address.

history

The establishment of the Melkite Cathedral Church in Latakia can be seen in connection with the establishment of the Archdiocese of Latakia, which is the youngest Melkite Archdiocese in the Antiochene Patriarchate. Previously, the Melkites of the area were under the Archdiocese of Tripoli in Lebanon . The Archdiocese of Latakia was established by spin-off in 1960, while the Lebanese Archdiocese kept the name Tripoli.

The first cathedral church was founded in 1962 under the first Archbishop of Latakia Paul Aschkar . The new cathedral, the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, was completed in 1990 under Archbishop Michel Yatim .

architecture

The Melkite Cathedral of Latakia is a basilica : Inside there are two rows of columns, which divide it into three naves . Light penetrates the church through the rows of arched windows on the cliffs. The iconostasis is made of pink alabaster . The church can accommodate about 200 people.

The Cathedral of Latakia is the seat of the Greek Catholic Archeparchy Latakia ( Archieparchia Laodicena Graecorum Melkitarum ).
