The Roman Catholic Church of the Birth of Our Lady is located in Cetviny (German: Zettwing ) in the municipality of Dolní Dvořiště (German: Unterhaid ) in the Czech Republic, right on the Austrian border on the Maltsch near Windhaag near Freistadt . It belongs to the diocese of Budweis .

history

The parish church was first mentioned in a document in 1384, but there was already a church in Zettwing around 1285.

After 1945 the German-speaking population was expelled and the place Zettwing was demolished. The church was located in the restricted area and was used by the communist regime as a stable and watchtower.

After the political change in 1989 it was accessible again. From 1995 to 2003 the church was extensively restored on the initiative of Gertrud Schöllhammer, through private donations and state funds from the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. On September 6, 2003, the consecration took place by the Budweiser Bishop Jiří Paďour .

The early Gothic church building, which is unique for the region, has frescoes from the 14th century. The baroque font that was located in Schlägl Abbey and a copy of the Zettwinger Madonna from 1490 were put up again after the renovation.

Today the church is easy to reach from the Austrian side thanks to the construction of the bridge over the Maltsch in the village of Hammern, and services are held regularly in summer.

Way of the Cross

In 1827 a chapel was built in the parish forest and expanded in 1844. In 1883 a way of the cross with 14 granite stations of the cross was built along the way and as the last station a Lourdes grotto was built at a fountain. This source was mentioned as early as 1616. The restoration of the Way of the Cross took place from 2000 to 2007.
