Maria Lullaby
Maria Lullaby is a Christmas art song by Max Reger based on words by Martin Boelitz .
Emergence
In the 1900s Reger began a series of publications Schlichte Weisen , Op. 76, which was calculated for greater sales success. In the sixth and last issue from 1912 with the subtitle Aus Christas und Lottis Kinderleben , dedicated to Maria Elisabeth von Sachsen-Meiningen , is contained as No. 52 of the complete series Mariä Lullaby for medium voice and piano.
As with all simple ways , Reger did not forego complex melodies and harmonies in the lullaby , but made concessions to the audience's expectations, here in particular with a recurring melody quote from the popular Christmas lullaby Joseph, dear Joseph mein , so that Mary's lullaby actually became a "best seller" . I.a. A bibliophile single edition of the song with colored woodcuts by Karl Lorenz was published in Malente-Gremsmühlen (tower press) in 1931 .
In addition to the original version, the song was published ad libitum in arrangements for violin and piano, for voice and orchestra, for piano solo and for organ with violin.
text
Maria sits in the rose heap and rocks her baby Jesus,
the warm summer wind gently blows through the leaves.
A colorful bird sings at her feet:
Sleep, little children, sweetie, go to sleep now!
Hold is your smile, hold the pleasure of your slumber,
lay your tired head tight to your mother's breast!
Sleep, little girl, sweetie, go to sleep now!
