history

In 1878 a fire broke out in the former barn of the Gierkinger inn in Neuzeug. In gratitude that the fire had not destroyed the whole place, the local residents built a church on the fire place, for which Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier laid the foundation stone on August 5, 1879. The stones of the altar grotto and the statue of the Virgin Mary come from Lourdes . On September 8, 1885, the church was consecrated by Bishop Ernest Maria Müller . It is the oldest Lourdes church in Upper Austria.

Originally, masses were only occasionally celebrated in the church until it was elevated to the position of Expositur church of the Sierning parish in 1941 , where masses were held every Sunday from then on. In 1950 the church was expanded. In 1963 Sierninghofen-Neuzeug was raised to an independent parish. Since the consecration of the new parish church in 1971, the Maria Lourdes Church has mainly been used for weddings and occasional services.
