The Maria Magdalena Hospital in Gotha is a former hospital in Gotha , Brühl 4, founded before 1223 and expanded from 1716–1719 .

history

The hospital was probably founded by Landgravine Elisabeth of Thuringia in 1223. At that time it was on the outskirts of the city on Brühl , near the Brühler Tor.

In 1225 the building was given to the Order of the Holy Cross with the stipulation that the sick and poor should be cared for in it. In 1489 the hospital came into the possession of the Order of St. John , and in 1525 it was given to Gotha's city council. 1716–1719 the hospital was completely renovated in the baroque style based on a design by Johann Erhard Straßburger . In 1840 the hospital was expanded. From 1946 to 1973 the house was a nursing home.

After giving up its original function, it fell to the city of Gotha, which redeveloped it as a city administration and club house in the 1990s.

Among other things, the Gotha women's center is housed here.

Since June 1st, 2016, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Genealogie Thüringen eV (AGT) has its new office here. With the House of Genealogy (HdGEN) , a family history meeting place has also been created.

building

Today the house is a baroque, plastered three-wing complex with a mansard roof . In the middle of it is a small, octagonal tower crowned with a dome and a lantern. The two-storey façade has a central projection and a stately portal in the middle. It is crowned with figurative virtues allegories of faith and love . Inside the entrance hall still has a groin vault from the previous building from 1541.

In the north wing there is a hospital chapel with a baroque pulpit altar . Today the Hospital Church is used by Seventh-day Adventists .
