Maria Adelaide Aglietta (born June 4, 1940 in Turin , † May 20, 2000 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Partito Radicale and the Federazione dei Verdi . She was a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1999 .

Life

Aglietta became involved in 1974 with the Partito Radicale (PR) and with the Centro d'informazione sulla sterilizzazione e sull'aborto ("Information Center on Sterilization and Abortion"), campaigning for referendums on the right to divorce and the legalization of abortion. In November 1976 she was elected segretaria (party chairman) of the PR, making her the first woman to head an Italian party. From 1979 to 1986 and from 1987 to 1990 she was a member of the Camera dei deputati , where she represented the constituency of Turin.

In April 1989, she moved from PR to the Verdi Arcobaleno ("Rainbow Greens"), which was absorbed by the Federazione dei Verdi the following year . From 1989 to 1999 she was a member of the European Parliament for two terms . From 1989 to 1991 she chaired the delegation for relations with Bulgaria, Romania and Albania. From November 1, 1990 to July 18, 1994 she was chairman of the Green Group in the European Parliament .
