Maria Elisabeth Müller

Maria Elisabeth Müller (born March 14, 1963 in Hanover ) is a German librarian and has been director of the State and University Library in Bremen since 2006 .

Professional background

While studying social sciences (1987–1995) she trained as a library assistant.

After completing her studies and training as a scientific librarian, her professional activities included the university libraries in Oldenburg , Göttingen and Hildesheim . As part of her assessor's thesis entitled "Managing the Changes: On Personnel Development Processes in Academic Libraries in the Framework of the New Control Model", she dealt in detail with the subject.

In Göttingen she was a research assistant in the "Meta-Lib" project of the German Research Foundation and developed the basics of a set of rules for the description of information resources in electronic systems under the term metadata .

In 2000 she took over the management of the library at the University of Hildesheim and built up the digital university library. She also focused on organizational and personnel development as well as the use of operational control elements.

In 2006 she was appointed to the vacant position of director of the State and University Library in Bremen.

Since 2019, it has been testing extended opening times on the weekends for the exam phases in winter and summer.

Library policy activities

  • From 2000 to 2006 she was a member of the governing body of the Lower Saxony consortium
  • From 2003 she was spokeswoman for the advisory board of the Joint Library Association (GBV)
  • From 2004 she was a representative of the academic libraries in Lower Saxony on the vocational training committee
  • In 2008 she was appointed to the Committee for Scientific Libraries and Information Systems of the German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • In 2016 she took over the management of the Bremen Library Association
  • Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Research Center for Eastern Europe
