The library and information system ( BIS ) of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Oldb) is a central institution of the university. The BIS performs the tasks of the university library. It covers the areas of library and media services. The library director Heike Andermann is currently provisional head of the BIS.

history

The university library came into being when the University of Oldenburg was founded in 1973. It took over holdings from the former University of Education in Oldenburg. In 1982, branch libraries were merged and the current central library on the Haarentor campus was moved to. In 1984 the science library followed on the Wechloy campus. From 2006 to 2009 the university library was part of the central facility IBIT - information, library and IT services, which arose from the merger of the university library and the university computer center. In 2009 these areas were separated again.

Current stock situation

There are currently around 1.4 million media items in the catalog. The holdings are presented in open access at the two university library locations. The much larger part is in the central library, the current scientific literature is offered in the reference library on the Wechloy campus. Approx. 31,000 e-journals are available for use in the digital library.
