Maria Hafner (benefactress)

Maria Hafner (born December 6, 1891 in Mauerkirchen , Upper Austria ; † January 10, 1969 there ) was a Red Cross helper and was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal in 1963 as "Angel of the 6th Army" .

Life

Maria Hafner grew up in Mauerkirchen as the daughter of the master carpenter couple Maria and Franz Katzlberger. In 1914 she started working for the Austrian Red Cross . From 1939 Maria Hafner headed the Mauerkirchen branch. She gained fame through her care for 194,888 soldiers, including 3,165 wounded and 4,038 refugees between May and September 1945. Together with other 32 Red Cross helpers, she organized bandages, medicines and hygiene items every day, thereby reducing the risk of infections , gangrene and epidemics a.

The local history researcher Herbert Brandstetter from Mauerkirch recorded its history and campaigned for the establishment of the Maria Hafner Memorial Park, which opened in June 2010.
