Parish church Maria Himmelfahrt in Gladbach

The Roman Catholic parish church Maria Himmelfahrt in the Neuwied district of Gladbach in Rhineland-Palatinate was built in 1914 in post-Gothic forms. The Catholic Church belongs to the dean's office Rhein-Wied in the diocese of Trier . November 21, 2003, she is under monument protection .

history

The village of Gladbach in the old Heimbach parish had had a chapel since at least 1764. This comes from a request made by the community to the Prince of Nassau-Usingen in 1804 "for the lease of the chapel belonging to the Wülfersberg manorial court so that they can use the building materials to expand their chapel". The reason given is that the community's chapel, built in 1764, can no longer hold the residents of the village and they are forced to go to the Rommersdorf Abbey Church . Because of the "changes that have occurred", this can no longer happen, and there is a lack of funds to expand the own chapel. The "changes that have occurred" meant the dissolution of the Rommersdorf monastery after secularization . The application to demolish the Wülfersberg chapel was rejected.

Today's Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in a post-Gothic style according to plans by the Neuwied architects Theodor and Heinrich Hermann. The foundation stone was laid in 1913, the church was consecrated in 1914 and consecrated in 1916 .

Construction and equipment

Building description

The church is designed as a two-aisled vaulted stepped hall with post-Gothic forms with a recessed 5/8 choir and a flank tower with a baroque-style onion dome west of the aisle. The plastered building, mainly made of alluvial stone, is loosened up by stone surrounds and tracery made of red sandstone and a rubble stone base.

Furnishing

The side altar comes from the earlier chapel (around 1730). Among the many figures in the church, a late Gothic Madonna (around 1460) from the former Wülfersberg monastery is particularly noteworthy. It cannot be ruled out that it is an "over-carved" figure. The remaining figures and reliefs were created in the 1930s. The organ was built in 1964.
