Maria Ohisalo (born March 8, 1985 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician of the Green Federation (VIHR). Since June 2019 she has been the interior minister of her country and chairwoman of the Green Federation.

Life

After Ohisalo finished school in 2004, she began studying social sciences at Helsinki University. She graduated with a master's degree in 2011. Since 2017 she holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Eastern Finland . She worked as a researcher for the City of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland. Her work focuses primarily on poverty research and housing policy. In 2017 she became a member of Helsinki City Council.

In the parliamentary elections in April 2019 , Ohisalo entered the Finnish parliament for the first time . On June 6, 2019, she was appointed Interior Minister in the Rinne cabinet. A few days later, on June 15, she was elected chairman of the Green Confederation after having been its deputy chairman from 2015. She ran as the only candidate for the election of the post. She belongs to the left wing of her party. Ohisalo has held her office as Minister of the Interior in the Marin government since December 10, 2019 .

She has been married to Miika Johansson since December 2019.

In February 2020, Ohisalo spoke out in favor of accepting orphaned children from the Greek refugee camp Moria in Finland.
