Manfred Huterer

Manfred Huterer (born December 28, 1961 in Regensburg ) is a German political scientist and diplomat . He has been ambassador to Belarus since July 2019 .

Life

During his school and student days Manfred Huterer was active in the Catholic youth association work (BdKJ), u. a. from 1980 to 1983 as diocesan leader of the Catholic Student Youth (KSJ-GCL) in Regensburg. After graduating from the Goethe-Gymnasium in Regensburg, he studied politics , international law and Eastern European history in Regensburg and Munich from 1981 to 1990 . During his studies, Huterer was at the University of Leningrad in 1986/87 with a DAAD scholarship . After completing his studies, he worked from 1990 to 1992 as a research assistant in the European research group (Werner Weidenfeld) at the University of Mainz .

Huterer is married to the Slavic and Eastern European historian Andrea Huterer and has two children.

career

Manfred Huterer joined the Foreign Service in 1992 and completed the preparatory service for the senior foreign service by 1993. After working in the political department at the Moscow embassy , he graduated from the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University in 1996/97 with a master's degree in public administration .

From 1997 to 2002 Huterer worked in the Foreign Office in Berlin, until 1999 in the Department of Disarmament and Arms Control and then in the planning staff . This was followed by assignments at the Beijing embassy as head of the press department and deputy. Head of the Political Department, then from 2005 to 2009 again in the planning staff of the Federal Foreign Office and from 2009 to 2012 as Deputy Head of the Political Department at the Washington Embassy .

Back in the Federal Foreign Office, Huterer worked until 2015 as head of division for Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and the Eastern Partnership and then moved to the embassy in Warsaw as envoy and permanent representative of the ambassador . In 2018 he returned to the Foreign Office's planning staff as an advisor for Eastern Europe before being appointed ambassador to Minsk / Belarus in July 2019 .

Huterer is the author of several publications on the West's relations with Russia.
