The Church of Maria Santissima Assunta (Most Holy Mary Assumed into Heaven) in Santa Lucia del Mela is the former cathedral of the Prelature Santa Lucia del Mela of the Roman Catholic Church in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily . Since the unification of the Prelature with the Archdiocese of Messina, it has served as a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese, which has since been called the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela .

history

Roger I had a church built on the site of today's church in 1094. This became the cathedral of the prelature after the establishment of the prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela.

The current church building was erected between 1608 and 1642.

description

The facade has a horizontal end, a triangular gable (tympanum) rises above the central part. The main marble portal is crowned by an eagle.

The interior of the church is divided into three naves by 12 granite columns.

In the central apse there is a large painting of the Assumption of Mary , to which the church is consecrated, by Fra Felice da Palermo (1771).

Other special features are a tombstone without an inscription with a papal tiara, the baptismal font and a holy water font by Gabriele Baptista (1845), an alabaster statue of " Ecce Homo " and the choir stalls made of carved walnut wood from the 17th century.

In the sacrament chapel there is a marble altar with a bas-relief of the Last Supper from the 18th century.

In addition to artistic paraments, the church treasure includes a reliquary with a relic of the crown of thorns .
