Maria Suelen Altheman (born August 12, 1988 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian judoka . She won silver twice at individual world championships.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Maria Suelen Altheman fights in the heavyweight division. She won her first international medal in 2005 when she won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. In 2008 Altheman won her only Brazilian championship title. At the Pan American Championships in 2010 she won two bronze medals, in addition to the heavyweight she was also successful in the open class. In 2011 she was second in the South American Championships and third in the Pan American Championships. At the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro, she finished second behind the French Anne-Sophie Mondière . At the Pan American Games in Guadalajara in 2011, she lost to Melissa Mojica from Puerto Rico in the semifinals, but Altheman won a bronze medal in the hope round.

In 2012 she won another bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. At the 2012 Olympic Games, she lost to the Japanese Mika Sugimoto in the quarterfinals . After winning the round of hope over Kazakh Gulschan Issanova , she lost the battle for bronze against Chinese Tong Wen . The following year she defeated the French Émilie Andéol in the semi-finals of the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro , and in the final she was defeated by the Cuban Idalys Ortíz . The two judoka also met in the final of the Pan American Championships 2014 and Ortíz won again. At the 2014 World Championships in Chelyabinsk, Ortíz and Altheman faced each other in a final for the third time within a year, and the Cuban won again. At the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Idalys Ortíz won the final against Vanessa Zambotti from Mexico , Altheman failed in the semifinals to Zambotti, but won a bronze medal. At the World Championships in Astana Altheman retired in her first fight against the South Korean Kim Min-jung .

In 2016 Altheman reached the final of the Pan American Championships in Havana and lost to Idalys Ortíz. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , as at the 2015 World Championships, the Brazilian was eliminated in the first round against Kim Min-jung. After a year without a top placement at an international championship, Altheman finished fifth at the 2018 World Championships in Baku. In front of a home crowd in Rio de Janeiro, she became military world champion in November 2018.
