Maria Troncatti

Maria Troncatti FMA (born February 16, 1883 in Corteno Golgi , † August 25, 1969 in Sucúa , Ecuador) was an Italian religious sister and missionary in Ecuador .

Life

She grew up in a large family. She wanted to become a Don Bosco sister at an early age, but her home pastor obliged her to wait until she came of age. She made her first religious profession in 1908 in Nizza Monferrato . During the First World War , she trained as a nurse in Varazze and worked as a Red Cross nurse in a military hospital .

In 1922 she went to Ecuador as a missionary, where she evangelized together with two other sisters, mainly among the Shuar , who belong to the Jívaro -speaking tribes. She built the mission stations in Macas , Seville Don Bosco and Sucúa and worked herself as a nurse, surgeon, orthopedist , dentist and anesthetist. In particular, she promoted Shuar women and the Christian understanding of marriage.

Troncatti died in a plane crash in Sucúa on August 25, 1969. Her relics are in Macas, in the Morona Santiago province .

Because of her merits, the Indians gave her the affectionate nickname La Madrecita (The Little Mother).

beatification

Troncatti was founded on November 24, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. beatified . Her liturgical feast day is August 25th .
