Maria Wetterstrand (born October 2, 1973 in Eskilstuna ) is a Swedish biologist and former politician .
Life
Wetterstrand studied Nordic languages in Umeå from 1993–1994 and then biology at the University of Gothenburg . She obtained her master's degree with a thesis on water purification on wet meadows. From 2001 to 2011 she was a member of the Miljöpartiet in the Swedish parliament , and from 2002 to 2011 she was the green party spokeswoman with Peter Eriksson .
Since her retirement from parliament and party leadership, Wetterstrand has appeared as a freelance writer, speaker and seminar leader. She writes regularly in Swedish newspapers such as Dagens Industri and Sydsvenska Dagbladet .
She has been married to the Finnish politician Ville Niinistö , who has been Minister of the Environment since 2011 , and has two children with him. In 2012, the couple announced their split.
