Maria Wine (born July 8, 1912 in Copenhagen , † April 22, 2003 in Solna ) was a Swedish writer and poet of Danish origin. She gained fame under her pseudonym . Her real name was Karla Lundkvist, nee Petersen.

Life

Maria Wine (Karla Petersen) had an unhappy childhood. When she was four, her mother took her to a children's home, where she was often beaten. She was later adopted by her aunt and her drunken husband and found no safety with them either. The turning point in her life was in June 1936 when she went on vacation to Røvig and met the Swedish writer Artur Lundkvist on the train. They exchanged a lot of letters and got married in the same year. Wine moved to Sweden with him. Here she got to know the world of literature and, inspired by her husband, began to write herself.

Maria Wine's traumatic childhood experiences flowed into her writing. They are processed in the autobiographical novels Man har skjutit ett lejon (1951) and Virveldans (1953). Her first collection of poems was rejected by the Gyldendals publishing house . But after publishing under her pseudonym, she became one of the most prolific and fascinating poets of the post-war period. Although her imagery is sometimes banal, her poetry draws its strength from the successfully conveyed sincerity. In 1943 she made her debut with the poetry collection Vinden ur mörkret , followed by Naken som ljuset (1945) and Feberfötter (1947). By her death in 2003, she published over thirty works.

Love is a constant theme in Wines poems: free, erotic and sensual love, devotion, but also complications. In the later poems, the central theme of the illness and death of her husband. She describes the long life together with Artur Lundkvist in the memoir book Minnena vakar (1994).
