Maria in the Paradise Garden by Jacob Carl Stauder , 1738

Mary in the Garden of Paradise (also Madonna in the Hortus conclusus , Mother of God in the Hortus conclusus ) is a pictorial theme of the iconography of Mary that is particularly popular on medieval miniature paintings, where Mary is shown seated in the Garden of Paradise . As a rule, it is an enclosed garden, hortus conclusus , which symbolizes the liberation of Mary from original sin, as well as her fertility.

A picture dedicated to this subject has been preserved by the master of St. Laurenz , as well as the little paradise garden in Frankfurt.
