Mary of Aragon

Maria of Aragon (* 1396 or 1403 in Castile ; † February 18, 1445 in Villacastín , Castile) was an Infanta of Aragon and the first wife of John II from 1420-45 Queen of Castile and León .

Life

Mary of Aragon was a daughter of King Ferdinand I of Aragon, Sicily and Sardinia and his wife Eleonore Urraca of Castile . In 1418 she was betrothed to the underage Castilian King John II, for whom her father Ferdinand I had reigned. The wedding of Mary and John II was celebrated on August 4, 1420 in Ávila in a very modest setting. The Brothers of Mary, the Infantes of Aragon, promoted this marriage connection and also actively intervened in Castilian politics.

The couple had a son and three daughters:

  • Catalina (October 5, 1422 - September 17, 1424), Princess of Asturias
  • Leonor (10 September 1423 - 22 August 1425), Princess of Asturias
  • Henry IV (January 5, 1425 - December 11, 1474), King of Castile and León since 1454
  • María (around 1428; † around 1429)

Maria and her son Heinrich took part in futile conspiracies that were supposed to bring about the overthrow of her husband's powerful favorite, Álvaro de Luna . Then she favored the marriage of her son with her niece Blanca . She died in February 1445 at the same time as her sister Eleanor of Aragon ; According to rumors circulating at the time, Álvaro de Luna was responsible for both deaths. Mary's body was buried in the royal pantheon of Guadalupe Monastery.
