The Mariahilf Chapel was a chapel in the city of Znojmo (German Znaim ) in the Czech Republic .

history

Originally there was a stone column with a representation of Mariahilf at its location. This was donated in 1730 by a master baker named Waigart or Weigart from Znaim as thanks for his recovery from a serious illness. At the same time he donated a lamp light three times a week.

With the purchase of the vineyard on May 4, 1818, on which this stone pillar was located, the couple Ulrich and Barbara Scharfnitzl (or Schafnitz) from the Roder family from Neuschallersdorf also took on the obligation to maintain the statue of the Virgin Mary and the lamplight .

On November 13, 1821, the Scharfnitzl couple asked the city authorities to build a small chapel with a domed roof and a roof lantern to protect the statue , in order to avoid repairs to the representation of the Virgin Mary, which were repeatedly necessary. The necessary permit was granted on February 1, 1822.

The superordinate district office stated, however, that this building was a new chapel and that the consent of the episcopal consistory would have been necessary. With a district official decree of April 3, 1822, the magistrate was therefore given a sharp reprimand for the unauthorized granting of the building permit .

On May 17, 1822, shortly before the completion of the chapel built by the district master builder Josef Demisch, the subsequent approval from the episcopal consistory was received. However, this stipulated that during the evening prayer customary at the Octave of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, no more than four candles were allowed to be lit in addition to the eternal light. The chapel was consecrated on the evening of July 13, 1822.

In 1840 a picture of the Virgin Mary painted by Ferenz was placed in the chapel.

Agnes Adamek sold the property with the chapel to the city of Znojmo in 1871. In 1895, Jakob Adamek, her husband, asked the city for compensation for the chapel, as it was not mentioned in the sales contract and he had continued to provide the light in the chapel as usual. He had also regularly taken the donations from the offering . The city of Znojmo reimbursed him the amount claimed, and the chapel finally became their property.

The Mariahilf Chapel, now on the edge of Mariánské náměstí ( Marienplatz ), was destroyed in 1952 by the communist rulers.
