The Mariazellerkreuz , formerly also known as St.-Oswald-Kreuz and Schweingger-Kreuz , is a holy house in the municipality of Frohnleiten in Styria . The exact time of origin is unknown.

location

The Heiligenhäuschen is located in the municipality of Frohnleiten on Brucker Straße. There it is located near the post office and the Rintpark.

history

The exact year and the reason for building the wayside shrine are unknown as there is no record of it. The first documentary mention was made in 1605 as the "St. Oswald Cross in front of the Bruckertor". At that time it was renovated by the magistrate . After the establishment of the local Servite monastery , it was consecrated to the Mater Dolorosa and renovated in 1799. Another renovation took place in 1840 by the widow of Martin Schweingger. It has since been referred to as the “Schweingger Cross”, although it is unknown whether it was ever owned by the Schweingger family.

Since when the Heiligenhäuschen was also called “Mariazellerkreuz” cannot be found out. For a long time, however, until the beginning of the First World War, it was a gathering point for pilgrims on their way to Mariazell . Furthermore, people who died nearby were first brought to the cross and then past the Frohnleitner parish church to the cemetery. Renewed renovation measures took place in the 1970s and 2008.
