Maridalsvannet is the largest lake in Oslo in the Maridalen and lies between Nordmarka and Lillomarka . The lake has an area of 3.83 km² and is 149 meters above sea level. Maridalsvannet is part of the Nordmarksvassdraget and leads its water to the south through the Akerselva .
The lake is Oslo's drinking water reservoir and covers around 90% of Oslo's water consumption. The water is treated in the nearby Oset sewage treatment plant .
One of the tributaries that flow into the Maridalsvannet, comes from the Skjærsjøen in the northwest and passed the power plant Hammeren , the oldest hydropower plant in Norway.
October 2007: Contaminated drinking water in Oslo
On October 17, 2007 there was a drinking water warning for the water from the Maridalsvannet. Giardia intestinalis - parasites had been discovered in three places in the drinking water that had come through the Oset sewage treatment plant.
On October 21st, the drinking water in Oslo was again drinkable.
